Health & Safety

Stay safe by following these guidelines

Archery can be dangerous, we have a Health and Safety Notice in place to minimise these risks.  You can read it below, or download the PDF file using the button.

Preparation
  • We always recommend that two archers should be present when shooting.
However, provided there is a warning notice displayed at all points of access, solo shooting by senior archers is permitted. Any member shooting on their own is doing so at their own risk in respect of personal injuries. (See Archery GB rules for shooting)
  • Junior archers must always be supervised by an adult member of Archery GB and a second adult. However, provided there is a warning notice displayed at all points of access and provided that they are an adult member of Archery GB, one parent/guardian alone may supervise their own child(ren). (See Archery GB rules for shooting)
  • Beware of moving equipment.  Do not attempt to move bosses on your own.  Gloves should be used when putting target stands out.
  • Archers should dress appropriately. Dangling items are a danger, wear non-slip footwear and clothes appropriate to the conditions.
  • Report damaged or unusable equipment to committee members.
  • Car Parking Warning:
No cars are to be parked riverside of the club house and please take care when reversing to ensure there is no equipment or any spectators/members in the way.
  • Prior to setting up bows and shooting, the following should be undertaken:
  1. Main gate to be closed with notice displayed.
  2. Ensure someone has a mobile phone for emergency use.
  3. Ensure that the first aid kit is available.
  4. When all in place, Range Captain determines ‘Safe to Shoot’.
Shooting
  • Listen for the Field Captain’s instructions:

SHOOT WHEN READY = SAFE TO START SHOOTING

COLLECT = SAFE TO COLLECT ARROWS

STOP OR FAST = STOP SHOOTING IMMEDIATELY

  • Arrows to be loaded only in forward facing position towards targets.
  • Do not cross the shooting line or enter the field shooting area.
  • During Beginner’s Sessions there is a greater risk resulting from being struck by arrows. All members to be extra vigilant and use the STOP command if any risk is identified.
Be Vigilant

If anyone sees a person or animal enter the area and likely to be in danger, then they should shout “STOP”.

All archers must stop and put their arrows away until the Range Captain gives the all clear.

Emergency
  • In the event of an emergency, phone ‘999’ attend to the situation as best you can and sent a person in a vehicle to open the main entrance gate and direct emergency serivces.
  • Fire evacuation instructions should be read at each location and complied with.
  • First Aid box is located in the container.
