On the beginner’s course our Instructors will provide you with an introduction to archery to include range safety, correct shooting technique and ensure you know how to shoot safely within a club environment. You will initially start with a training Barebow and an introduction to other bow types can be provided once the course has been completed.
Persons on a course are expected to obey the rules of the Club and the safety guidelines at all times and to treat the facilities with the greatest respect. The Club is affiliated to the Grand National Archery Society (Archery GB), Grand Western Archery Society (Region) and the Gloucestershire Archery Society (County), all of whom have a code of conduct and a set of regulations which are to be obeyed at all times.
Courses are a minimum of 4 hours tuition usually spread over 2 sessions and are held at our home ground.
If it is necessary to cancel a session due to bad weather an alternative session will be provided. If you are unable to attend a particular session, please let us know beforehand. We cannot accept beginners into the Club unless they have received a minimum of 4 hours coaching and have been deemed safe to shoot within the club environment.
We allow juniors of age 8 years and above to apply to join the beginner’s course, however exceptions might be made for juniors under this age subject to approval of the Head Instructor.
Acceptance of each junior on the course is subject to the approval of the Head Coach.
In accordance with Archery GB and club policies for the protection of children and vulnerable adults, all juniors must be accompanied by parents, or parentally approved guardians, at all times when shooting.
We provide all the equipment for the course. Please, do not buy any equipment yourselves until you have decided that you wish to continue on your archery journey. If you join the club after the course, we can offer the use of club bows but be aware they may be required for other beginners to use during their courses and we would then expect members to then purchase their own equipment within a reasonable timescale. We can offer advice to help you purchase your own equipment.
You should wear comfortable but close-fitting clothing. If it’s chilly it’s better to wear several thin layers rather than one bulky one & perhaps bring a woolly hat. In particular it’s important that you don’t wear jumpers or jackets with baggy sleeves as bow strings tend to catch on them & spoil your shot!
Shoes must be closed toe – no sandals. In wet weather the field can get muddy so good sturdy waterproof boots are a good option.
